The Carolina Panthers have signed punter Mike Scifres to a one-year contract. The signing was announced by the team on Tuesday. A longtime punter for the Chargers, Scifres has played exclusively for San Diego since 2003 until he was released by the team last month, following their selection of punter Drew Kaser in the 2016 NFL Draft. The 35-year-old Scifres was a fifth-round selection in the 2003 draft and currently holds the record for most career punt yards in Chargers’ history with 33,797. Scifres joins Carolina’s roster alongside fellow punter Swayze Waters, who he’ll be competing against for the position vacated by Brad Nortman. Nortman left the Panthers via free agency during the offseason and signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. In a related move, the Panthers released punter Michael Palardy in order to make room on the 90-man roster for Scifres. As noted by the Carolina Panthers, Scifres has averaged 45.3 yards per punt across his 13-season NFL career, including at least one 60-yard-plus punt per year. “What I did for 13 years in San Diego I still feel that I’m capable of doing here,” said Scifres in a statement released by the Carolina Panthers. “I still feel I can play. Going into the draft, I knew there was a possibility I would end up getting released by San Diego. This is a new chapter, and it’s about the player I can be for this team.” Remember, you can make sure you are there in person as the Panthers embark on their next run at the Super Bowl.
